The White Frog Red Carpet at SFIAAFF

It was a beautiful night in San Francisco to celebrate the 30thAnnual San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival. Presented by the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM), this event was a must to attend. My photographer Erilou and I had the pleasure of attending this star studded event. The Opening night was held at the Castro Theater and a Gala reception at the Asian Art Museum followed. The world premier of White Frog, directed by Quentin Lee was featured. White Frog is a drama film about a teen named Nick (Booboo Stewart) with Asperger’s Syndrome who has to cope with the death of his brother Chaz (Harry Shum, Jr.). With an amazing and talented cast, many of the actors who are in White Frog were present at the movie premiere. I had the pleasure of interviewing and meeting many of the actors such as Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf), Harry Shum Jr (Glee), Booboo Stewart (Twilight), and many other talents within the film industry. Read on to read interviews with BooBoo Stewart, Ellie Wen, Harry Shum, Jr. and more.

WideLantern and Awkward Russel went to the premiere of White Frog to report live from the red carpet as stars of the film entered the Castro Theater:

I shed man tears by the time the credits rolled.  This is a testament to Booboo Stewart as an actor.  He gave an astonishing performance.  Don’t worry, this is not a sad or overly dramatic movie; it’s a character-driven film with multiple unexpected, funny moments.

“It was really difficult. I was so tired. Every day I’d come off set and I’d just fall asleep like in the car. Oh my gosh! My brain has never hurt that much in my whole entire life, even after trying to do Math or something like that.”

~ BooBoo Stewart on playing a teen with Asberger’s in the upcoming indie, “White Frog” alongside Harry Shum, Jr., and BD Wong.

Ken Choy, of Hyphen Magazine, writes about the many discussions about White Frog:

What started out as a hobby became the dramatic feature White Frog with an all star Asian American cast led by award-winning director Quentin Lee, set to premiere at the prestigious 2012 San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival. While the specifics may be unique, the theme of acceptance is universal.

Known in the independent film world, the director credits producer Chris Lee for pushing him to make his broadest and most accessible film.

Peter Martin of TwitchFilm.com gives his thoughts on some of the films that he’s most excited to see at SFIAAFF, among them - White Frog:

The organizers continue to highlight quality pictures from Asian American and Canadian filmmakers, as a reminder of the domestic talent that is often overlooked in favor of high-profile international pictures. ~ Peter Martin

The San Francisco Chronicle writes about White Frog’s premiere at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival:

Quentin Lee’s “White Frog” has them all, a local legend and fresh cutting-edge faces, and therefore is a natural as the opening film of a 30th SFIAAFF mindful of its heritage but ready to go in new directions during its March 8-18 run.
